Black Elder or Sambucus nigra is the Elder native to the European continent and has been cultivated there since at least 2000 BCE.. The flowers bloom in summertime and are helpful for maladies of the skin as well as for fevers and respiratory irritation. Elderflower helps even the complexion and calm inflamed, acne prone skin. It also helps break up mucus in the lungs and as a diaphoretic, induces sweating to help break fevers. Where elderberry may work more on the lower respiratory system, elderflower may work on the upper respiratory system.
