Natural Dyeing with Plants

  • Hedgerow Herb Co. 811 E Burnside St. Portland United States (map)

Learn the art of plant dyeing with Janessa fortes Bautista

Plants bring vibrancy and color to our world in more ways than one. Peoples from all over the world have worked with plants to color their garments. Though natural dyes is still found in many traditional cultures around the world, artificial dyes came into use in the 1850s changing the global garment industry. Find creative connection to the plant kingdom and join fiber artist Janessa fortes Bautista in learning the art of natural dyeing at Hedgerow Herb Co. Janessa will be guiding us through the hands on process of dyeing both silk and cotton kerchiefs using marigold flowers grown from her abundantly beautiful dye garden. You will get to take home your own dyed silk kerchief and cotton kerchief at the end of the evening. May these garments bring the golden light of the sun to your adorned body this winter, or serve as handmade gifts for your loved ones this holiday season, as you start on or continue on your personal journey of plant dying, hand crafting, and ancestral skill practices.

Space is limited for this hands on workshop. Please secure your ticket in advance. Thank you!

About your Facilitator

Janessa fortes Bautista created the Rainbow + Yarrow collection to bring into balance- beauty, spiritual practice, plant life frequency, function and everyday life. Rainbow + Yarrow embodies the rainbow of colors that is Mother nature’s pure offering and the plant medicines that nourish and heals us. She is creating a simple, comfortable, gentle and calming collection of clothing and goods for her life and now is sharing it with you. Working with natural fibers has always been key since she started making clothes as a kid, in 1995. Rainbow + Yarrow is now evolving into more than a product line, it is a way of being.

In this life.. we honor the earth, the Mother, and the source of all life.

Janessa is a designer and textile artist living in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon with her son and white wolf dog, Beija. She has been growing in community through sharing daily practice, beautiful meals, pouring tea, and sitting in ceremony.  Janessa lives surrounded by a community of healers, plant medicine teachers, artists, farmers, musicians, fire tenders and magical creatures. As a first generation Filipina American, she strives to learn and find connections to the ways of her ancestors. Working with plant dyes and plant medicine is a strong source of connection. She grows her dye plants just steps away from her outdoor dye studio, overlooking the cedar and alder forest. With wisdom and compassion, she aspires to be of integrity with all aspects of her life practice and work for the benefit of all beings.
